    Please note that Volunteers must be 18 yrs and over, with the exception of students 14 yrs and up registered in our Student Volunteer Program. For more information on the Student Volunteer Program, please contact our Volunteer Coordinator at volunteer@kingstonhumanesociety.ca and fill out an application form, found on the student volunteers tab.

    Please note: Children under the age of 14 are not eligible to volunteer at the shelter, however, we encourage them to help us out by creating posters showing proper pet care which we will gladly display around the shelter, or they can organize their own fundraisers or donation drives.

  • Student Volunteers

    Due to the overwhelming support of the community, OUR VOLUNTEER PROGRAM IS AT CAPACITY.  Be sure to follow us on social media for updates, or check back here in the future. 

    The Kingston Humane Society invites students ages 14 - 18, who are looking to fulfill their high school community service hours to apply for a volunteer position with us.

    Successful candidates will demonstrate the following:

    • Love and concern for the wellbeing of our animals.
    • Willingness to help.
    • Commit to an extra 10 "goodwill" volunteer hours on top of your required 40 hrs - Your 40 hrs will not be signed off until your "goodwill" hours are complete.
    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
    • Punctuality, and an excellent attendance rate.
    • Respect for staff, fellow volunteers and visitors.

    All successful candidates must attend an orientation session, and a specialized training session for specific volunteer positions prior to beginning their volunteer commitment.

    The following volunteer roles will be available for student volunteers:

    • Cat Cuddling - this will be the main volunteer task.
    • Occasionally helping out in the front office (cleaning, organizing, etc.).
    • Occasionally helping out at special events.

  • Current Volunteer Opportunities

    Volunteer Requirements:

    Volunteers must be 18 years of age and older, with the exception of our student volunteer program.

    • A minimum commitment of six months is required to volunteer.
    • Volunteers must complete an application form, successfully pass both a reference and criminal records check, and complete orientation/training sessions before beginning their volunteer duties.
    • Volunteers must be able to work safely around all species of animals.
    • Completing an application does not guarantee a volunteer position.

  • Closed Volunteering Opportunities

    Dog Walking; This is one of our most popular volunteer opportunities. As a dog walker you will be enriching the lives of our dogs as they wait for their forever homes. Our KHS dog walkers walk all different sizes and breeds of dogs and in all kinds of weather.

    Cat Cuddling; Volunteers help socialize our cats and kittens by cuddling and playing with them.

    Adoption Events; Volunteers showcase our cats and kittens to potential adopters and assist with the adoption process at special Adoption Events held throughout the year.

    Driving; Volunteer drivers assist us by transporting our animals to and from their vet appointments during the week.

    Lost/Found Pet Program; Volunteers assist with administrative tasks for this program.

    Special Events; Volunteers assist with various tasks at our Special Events held throughout the year.

    Fundraising; Volunteers assist the KHS with fundraising projects and activities.

    Office Assistants; Volunteers assist staff in the front office with daily administrative tasks. Tasks may include answering the phone, computer work, filing etc.

    Information Booths; Volunteers work in our information booth promoting KHS programs and services at various events throughout the city.

    Handy Person; We are seeking volunteers to assist us with minor repairs and projects around the shelter from time to time. Repairs would include, putting up shelves, painting, fixing doorknobs, repairing flooring, repairing drywall, etc. If you are an experienced handy person and would like to help us keep the shelter in good repair, please contact us today.
