    Thank you for your interest in our Volunteer Program. Please use the tabs to the left of this panel to browse our current and future positions, FAQs and application forms.

    Please note that Volunteers must be 18 yrs and over, with the exception of students 14 yrs and up registered in our Student Volunteer Program. For more information on the Student Volunteer Program, please contact our Volunteer Coordinator at [email protected] and fill out an application form, found on the student volunteers tab.

    Please note: Children under the age of 14 are not eligible to volunteer at the shelter, however, we encourage them to help us out by creating posters showing proper pet care which we will gladly display around the shelter, or they can organize their own fundraisers or donation drives.

    Current Volunteering Opportunities

    Seniors to Youth for the LOVE of Animals:


    Are you a senior over the age of 55 looking for a rewarding volunteer experience? We are currently accepting volunteers to engage youth ages 6-12 using reading and creative activities to build empathy toward animals.

    Please note that a CPIC vulnerable sectors check will be required, successful candidates will be reimbursed the cost up to $30. Due to the time constraints, we ask all those applying to go in person to do the CPIC as online will take up to two weeks for results to be in.     This program is a weekly program from 4-5pm held at Boys and Girls Club Kingston and Chapters.

    Closed Volunteering Opportunities

    Dog Walking

    This is one of our most popular volunteer opportunities. As a dog walker you will be enriching the lives of our dogs as they wait for their forever homes. Our KHS dog walkers walk all different sizes and breeds of dogs and in all kinds of weather.

    Cat Cuddling

    Volunteers help socialize our cats and kittens by cuddling and playing with them.

    Adoption Events

    Volunteers showcase our cats and kittens to potential adopters and assist with the adoption process at special Adoption Events held throughout the year.

    Driving

    Volunteer drivers assist us by transporting our animals to and from their vet appointments during the week.

    Lost/Found Pet Program

    Volunteers assist with administrative tasks for this program.

    Special Events

    Volunteers assist with various tasks at our Special Events held throughout the year.

    Fundraising

    Volunteers assist the KHS with fundraising projects and activities.

    Office Assistants

    Volunteers assist staff in the front office with daily administrative tasks. Tasks may include answering the phone, computer work, filing etc.

    Information Booths

    Volunteers work in our information booth promoting KHS programs and services at various events throughout the city.

    Handy Person

    We are seeking volunteers to assist us with minor repairs and projects around the shelter from time to time. Repairs would include, putting up shelves, painting, fixing doorknobs, repairing flooring, repairing drywall, etc. If you are an experienced handy person and would like to help us keep the shelter in good repair, please contact [email protected]

    Consultants

    We are seeking “Subject Matter Experts” to serve as volunteer consultants to the staff and Board of Directors from time to time for various projects and activities around the shelter. We are looking for assistance in the following areas:

    • Information technology
    • Human Resources and labour relations
    • Heating/Ventilation/Air Conditioning systems
    • Appliance maintenance and repair
    • Construction projects
    • Flooring
    • Roofing/eavestrough maintenance
    • Painting
    • Animal care and veterinary medicine
    • Plumbing
    • Electrical service and repairs
    • Vehicle maintenance
    • Landscaping
    • Marketing

    Ideally, Volunteer Subject Matter Experts will have accumulated significant experience and relevant credentials in their area of expertise. If you are interested in assisting as a volunteer consultant, please contact the KHS Volunteer Coordinator.
